Res-Intel is supporting San Diego Gas & Electric’s Emerging Technology Pilot Project
Res-Intel has been chosen to evaluate the PEEK pilot project administered by San Diego Gas and Electric’s (SDG&E) Emerging Technology Program. The project is designed to deliver PEEK devices to 500 customers on SDG&E’s time-of-use (TOU) rate and assess its cost effectiveness and potential for integrated demand side management (IDSM).
IDSM is a strategic approach for designing and delivering energy efficiency and electricity demand reductions during times of peak usage on the electricity grid. The PEEK device is an enabling technology that is designed to help TOU customers understand and respond to price changes. It receives and displays current and upcoming price tiers using colored lights and “traffic light logic”. PEEK also comes with a smart phone app that gives customers a closer look at their real time rates and notifies them of changes in electricity rates and peak pricing events.
The PEEK device has the potential to provide a linkage between demand response (DR) and energy efficiency. DR activities are achieved by enabling customers to easily respond to TOU price signals and DR peak time events. Customers may also conserve energy by simply reducing consumption during on-peak hours, or shifting usage to off-peak hours.
Res-Intel’s eBase analytics platform is being used to analyze hourly electricity data to determine both demand reduction (kW) and energy savings (kWh) associated with the device. eBase predicts each week’s electricity consumption based on temperature forecasts and historical demand patterns to identify optimal times to notify customers about peak events. Using its advanced software and analytics, Res-Intel is supporting SDG&E in identifying cost-effective tools to help integrate increasing amounts of renewable energy into its operations.
Res-Intel is a national leader in mass-scale benchmarking of residential buildings. Its benchmarking engine provides micro-targeted recommendations for property owners and managers to cost-effectively reduce energy and water usage. The Res-Intel software platform has been partially funded under California Energy Commission Public Interest Energy Research grant #57356A/11-12 and #58076A/14-09G.
